CalFresh to Pause Benefits During Government Shutdown

The federal government shutdown is approaching one month. And as it continues to drag on, food benefits for nearly 42 million people are in limbo. As of this morning, CalFresh - the state’s version of SNAP -  will be paused, after the USDA announced that there will be no benefits issued Nov. 1. We are going to get a better understanding of what’s in jeopardy locally. Ethan Dye is the Director of the Sacramento County Department of Human Assistance, which administers CalFresh among other government programs for low-income residents.

Bay Area Immigration Crackdown Reversal

A major immigration crackdown planned for San Francisco and the larger Bay Area was suddenly called off last week, one day after news broke that more than 100 federal agents were being deployed to a Coast Guard base near Alameda. This comes as President Donald Trump has floated the idea of deploying the National Guard to control crime in San Francisco, despite city officials saying they aren’t wanted and that crime is declining. Investigative Reporter Matthias Gafni from the San Francisco Chronicle joins Insight to talk about the reaction to the news of this deployment, and what led to its reversal.

Ryan Lillis is the Associate General Manager of News at KVIE and he joins us today to talk about why this local news source got started.
